The Southeastern Connecticut & Southern Rhode Island Shoreline
The Southeastern Connecticut and bordering Southern Rhode Island Shoreline is a relatively small geographic area covering just 60 miles from where the Connecticut River joins Long Island Sound in the west to the lovely sailing waters of Newport, RI in the east. The area has long attracted visitors and residents alike with its beautiful ocean beaches, sparkling sailing waters and picturesque seaside communities.
In the far west of the region, Lyme CT overlooks the Connecticut River and offers a wonderful country setting with beautiful farmland sloping to the edge of protected deep water coves. A little further up the river in the Victorian Village of East Haddam, theatergoers enjoy wonderful musical productions at the historic riverfront Goodspeed Opera House. Meanwhile, further down the shoreline in the charming and historic fishing villages of Noank, Mystic and Stonington, CT visitors are captivated by the areas beautiful architecture, interesting shops, great seaside restaurants, and a wide variety of area attractions that include The Mystic Seaport, The Mystic Aquarium, and The U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Serious boaters, sailors and fisherman delight in the area’s protected deep water harbors, and find an ideal home port and jumping off point for exploring the open waters of Block Island Sound, Nantucket, and the Elizabeth Islands.
One mile southeast of Stonington, CT lies the picturesque turn of the century village of Watch Hill, Rhode Island, which is set on the high grounds of a peninsula that on one side overlooks the protected waters of Little Narragansett Bay, and on the other side the unspoiled beachfront waters of Block Island Sound and the open Atlantic. Since Watch Hill is the first spot on the mainland coast north of New York City that’s both beyond Long Island Sound and Fishers Island Sound, it’s the first beachfront community north of New York City that enjoys beautiful mile long beaches with open surf.
The picture perfect village of Watch Hill is surrounded by large turn of the century shingle style homes that enjoy either commanding views of the bay, or wonderful panoramic vistas of the gorgeous open beachfront that follows the Rhode Island coastline through the lovely seaside communities of Charleston, Narragansett, Jamestown, and finally Newport with its famous historic mansions, prime sailing grounds, and vibrant town center bustling with interesting shops, fine restaurants and nightlife.
