LOCATION
Widely considered the most picturesque seaside village in
Connecticut, historic Stonington Borough is a lovely
cared for place of narrow tree-lined streets with
stately 18th and 19th century residences, interesting
shops, and cozy restaurants. The area has an old
fashioned ambience with neighbors who still gather for
farmers' markets, parades, and entertainment on the
square. Yet the main focus of life still revolves around
the sea.
Situated on a narrow peninsula surrounded by Fisher's
Island Sound and Little Narragansett Bay, Stonington is
home to a scenic deepwater harbor that shelters
Connecticut's last remaining commercial fishing fleet.
Also, because of its many amenities and its location at
the end of Long Island Sound, Stonington has long been
recognized as a major yachting center.
Conveniently located halfway between New York and Boston,
the area has many popular visitor attractions including
Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, and various summer
theatres. Ocean beaches, tennis, numerous golf courses,
horseback riding, and excellent salt and freshwater
fishing are just some of the area's many recreational
opportunities.
PROPERTY
Ideally sited directly across from the town green, this
stately 19th century home was originally built by a
prosperous local merchant. The property is large by
village standards and carries through to a rear street
where the rare village two-car garage is located. A
stone patio leads to a well landscaped and secluded rear
garden. The house offers an unusual amount of privacy
because there are only three homes fronting on this side
of the green.
RESIDENCE
The entrance hall leads to the front
staircase and a very spacious living room with the
original marble fireplace, built-in bookcases, high
ceilings, and original plaster moldings. The many
windows lend a bright and airy feel. The oversized
dining room also has a working fireplace and leads to a
charming enclosed sun porch, as well as to the rear of
the house where the open plan kitchen, dining and family
room are located. A third fireplace is here as are more
bookcases, a full bath, and rear staircase. The easy
flow of rooms works well for those who enjoy
entertaining guests. Side and rear doors make the
gardens and patio easily accessible.
The second floor also has high ceilings and original
wide-planked floors. The master bedroom has the fourth
fireplace and en suite access to a charming,
old-fashioned bath with claw foot tub and original wood
floors. Three other bright, well proportioned bedrooms
and the third bath are also on this floor. Lastly, a
library/office with the fifth fireplace separates the
master suite from the other bedrooms.
