LOCATION
Situated along the scenic southeastern corner of
Connecticut’s coastline and standing guard at the
entrance to Fishers Island Sound, historic Stonington
Borough is blessed with a scenic deepwater harbor which
shelters Connecticut’s last remaining commercial fishing
fleet and many enthusiastic summertime yachtsmen. With
its treelined streets, interesting shops, cozy
restaurants and stately 18th and 19th century homes,
Stonington is widely considered the most picturesque
seaside village in Connecticut.
PROPERTY
Tucked away on a quiet side street, this wonderful
family compound includes three homes that overlook a
beautiful secret garden blooming with perennials, herbs,
and oriental plantings, and accented with stone pathways
and a sundial. The centerpiece of this wonderful estate
is a meticulously restored 1840s Federal home that is
handsomely outfitted with double dutch doors,
floor to ceiling bookcases, random width flooring and
several skylights. With its great location just two
short blocks from the sailboat filled harbor, this
elegant yet unpretentious home would make an ideal
retreat for either year round living or summer weekend
escapes.
RESIDENCE
First Floor: The front door opens to a small hallway
that leads on the left to a handsomely equipped Kitchen
(17.5x14) with bar seating, roomy closets and a built in
desk. The kitchen then flows into an inviting breakfast
room which has large picture windows looking out onto
the garden patio. The kitchen in turn accesses a large
and cheerful Living Room (23x15) that includes a
handsome fireplace, vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors
and sliding doors that overlook a courtyard and the
garden. The Dining Room (14x13), which is accessed from
both the living room and kitchen, includes another
fireplace, a wet bar and china cabinets. A hallway off
the dining room leads to a cozy Library (18.5x10) with
floor to ceiling bookcases, hardwood floors and French
doors that open to the garden. The first floor also has
a half bath adjacent to the library.
Second Floor: The second
floor has three spacious bedrooms that can be accessed
by either of two staircases. All three of the bedrooms
boast large closets and charming views of the grounds.
There are also two full baths on this floor, one of
which includes a small laundry area.
Third Floor: The master
suite encompasses the entire third floor and includes a
sitting room, wet bar, his and hers tiled baths, and a
private balcony that enjoys spectacular sunset water
views. From the balcony a ladder leads to a rooftop
lookout that sports wonderful views of both the village
and the sailboat filled harbor.
Outbuildings: The property
includes two separate guest houses that are each located
on their own deeded town lots, and could be sold
individually if an owner so wished. One guest house
dates to the 19th century, and is full of charm with its
wide board floors, built in bookcases and massive stone
hearth. The second guest house includes a two car garage
on its ground floor, and a fully equipped, bright and
cheerful one bedroom apartment with water views on its
second floor.
