LOCATION
Widely considered the most picturesque seaside village
in Connecticut, historic Stonington Borough is a
lovingly cared for place of narrow tree-lined streets
with stately 18th and 19th century residences,
interesting shops, and cozy restaurants. The area has an
old-fashioned ambience with neighbors who still gather
for farmers’ markets, parades, and entertainment on the
square. Yet the main focus of life still
revolves around the sea.
Situated on a narrow peninsula surrounded by Fishers
Island Sound and Little Narragansett Bay, Stonington is
home to a scenic deepwater harbor that shelters
Connecticut’s last remaining commercial fishing fleet.
Also, because of its many amenities and its location at
the end of Long Island Sound, Stonington has long been
recognized as a major yachting center.
Conveniently
located halfway between New York and Boston, the area
has many popular visitor attractions including Mystic
Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, and various summer theatres.
Ocean beaches, tennis, numerous golf courses, horseback
riding, and excellent salt and freshwater fishing are
just some of the area’s many recreational opportunities.
PROPERTY
Sited on a quiet corner at the beginning of the main
residential street, the house is within a short walking
distance of the harbor, Water Street with its shops and
restaurants, the yacht club and all other activities.
Well built in 1840 for a wealthy merchant, the house has
been well cared for through the years and has recently
undergone substantial renovations including a new
heating and air conditioning system, wiring, plumbing,
kitchen and baths. Virtually all of the original details
remain, including elaborate plaster moldings adjoining
the more than ten foot ceilings, and beautiful wooden
trim, doors and original hardware. During prohibition,
the basement functioned as the village speakeasy and the
original painted walls and bar remain in pristine
condition. The exterior is enclosed with the original
cast iron fence, mature trees and a professionally
landscaped garden. A charming screened summer dining
porch is nestled within a perennial garden. A two car
garage attached to the house provides ample
parking and storage.
RESIDENCE
The central entrance hall on the first floor opens to
the original curved staircase and twin living rooms on
either side, each with a wood burning fireplace. A
library with built-in shelves, wet bar and powder room
are accessed through one of these rooms, and both lead
to a large central dining room with the original china
closet and fireplace. A kitchen with the fourth
fireplace, guest suite with sitting room and full bath,
laundry room, breakfast room and rear stairs complete
this level.
The second floor contains
the master suite with partial ocean views and has his and her dressing rooms and
new bath. There are two other bedrooms, each having a
fireplace and one with en suite bath. The ceiling height
on this level still exceeds nine feet. The configuration
of the master suite would easily allow for conversion of
one of the dressing rooms into an additional bedroom if
desired.
The third floor is partially finished with a sitting
room having a large picture window to take advantage of
the views of Little Narragansett Bay and Watch Hill,
Rhode
Island.
