LOCATION
Widely considered the most picturesque
seaside village in Connecticut, historic Stonington
Borough is a lovingly cared for place of narrow
tree-lined streets with stately 18th and 19th century
residences, interesting shops, and cozy restaurants. The
area has an old-fashioned ambience with neighbors who
still gather for farmers' markets, parades, and
entertainment on the square. Yet the main focus of life
still revolves around the sea.
Situated on a narrow peninsula surrounded by Fisher's
Island Sound and Little Narragansett Bay, Stonington is
home to a scenic deepwater harbor that shelters
Connecticut's last remaining commercial fishing fleet.
Also, because of its many amenities and its location at
the end of Long Island Sound, Stonington has long been
recognized as a major yachting center.
Conveniently located halfway between New York and
Boston, the area has many popular visitor attractions
including Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, and various
summer theatres. Ocean beaches, tennis, numerous golf
courses, horseback riding, and excellent salt and
freshwater fishing are just some of the area's many
recreational opportunities.
PROPERTY
Ideally sited on a quiet residential street
in the heart of the village, the house is within a short
walking distance to the harbor pictured above, Water
Street with its shops and restaurants, and all other
activities. Yet, the street is perhaps the least
traveled in the village.
Built in 1884, the Victorian home has undergone
substantial renovations including a new kitchen and
baths, windows, plumbing and wiring. Many original
details remain, including bead board wainscoting, high
ceilings, moldings and doors. The first floor now has a
spacious open floor plan more suitable for today's
living.
Outdoors, a very private deck steps down into a large
landscaped and fenced garden. A parking courtyard
occupies the side yard.
RESIDENCE
The first floor has the original staircase, a
living room leading to the open family room and combined
kitchen and dining rooms. A powder room, mudroom and the
rear staircase are adjacent to the new kitchen with
pantry and island.
The second floor has three charming bedrooms, two
renovated full baths, laundry facilities and access to
the third floor, which is a large, finished room with
high ceilings and many potential uses including bedroom,
library or study.
All told, this bright and cheerful home contains 3 to 4
bedrooms, 2 full baths, powder room, combination
kitchen, dining and family room, and living room.
