LOCATION
Located in Stonington, Connecticut near the Rhode Island
border in an exceptional pastoral setting, the property
is only minutes away from historic Stonington Borough
with its narrow tree-lined streets, stately 18th and
19th century residences, cozy restaurants and
interesting shops. Widely considered the most
picturesque seaside village in Connecticut, the borough
attracts an eclectic following including boaters,
gentlemen farmers and artists.
In addition to its farms
and historic villages, Stonington is home to a sheltered
and scenic deepwater harbor that is both a major
yachting center and a haven for Connecticut’s last
remaining commercial fishing fleet. The proximity of
true ocean beaches, numerous golf courses, horseback
riding, excellent salt and freshwater fishing, and
rivers and bays suitable for kayaking are only some of
the reasons for the area’s well-deserved reputation as a
destination for outdoor recreation.
The area is
conveniently located halfway between New York and
Boston. Transportation needs are readily serviced by
Interstate 95, Amtrak and the nearby T.F. Green Airport
in Rhode Island.
PROPERTY
The 1730 Deacon Joseph Denison homestead, also known as
Great Hearth, is universally considered one of the most
prominent estates in town and is an outstanding example
of an authentic period home. There are numerous
attractive and complementary outbuildings, including a
two bedroom guest house with kitchen and living room, a
pool house with outdoor kitchen and his and her shower
rooms, a heated six car garage, and an equipment garage.
Two picturesque farm ponds, specimen trees and mature
landscaping that is both elegant and unpretentious,
attract a variety of wildlife. Restored original New
England stone walls crisscross the open vistas and
define the outdoor spaces. Also included is a separate
property directly across the narrow, rural and lightly
trafficked road. Together there are fourteen acres of
land in a lovely combination of woodland and rolling
open fields.
RESIDENCE
The front entrance opens to a spacious foyer with the
original staircase, mouldings and wideboard flooring. To
the right is the large dining room with a lovely working
fireplace, built in corner cupboard with clamshell and
glass doors. The painted original wainscot paneling,
ceiling mouldings and elaborate fireplace surround have
been perfectly maintained. To the left of the foyer is
the living room with double clamshell cabinets flanking
the working fireplace, original ceiling mouldings and
wainscot paneling.
Through the living room is the original house, c. 1680.
The home’s namesake eight foot wide great hearth with
beehive oven and iron cranes dominates the original wood
paneled room. A library with built in shelves and wood
paneling adjoins this wing and leads to a center hall
with a charming powder room, built in armoire and rear
staircase.
The keeping room with the original hearth defines the
kitchen with sitting room. Opposite the stone hearth in
the kitchen is an indoor wood fired oven with copper
hood. A very large pantry, laundry and workroom is
accessed through the rear of the kitchen. A three season
sitting porch is also adjacent to the keeping room.
There are three bright and spacious bedrooms upstairs
all with working fireplaces and two with en suite baths.
Many of the original details and flooring have survived
the centuries thanks to the loving care of the home’s
long time owners. The ceilings are high throughout,
especially for a period house. All in all, the gracious
details and scale befitted the home’s original prominent
Stonington family.
