LOCATION
With its beautiful, soft sandy beaches, sparkling water
and crashing surf, the small seaside community of Watch
Hill has long been a prime summer destination. There are
numerous public and private golf courses, a protected
deepwater harbor, secluded coves, and a charming
seasonal village filled with interesting shops and
restaurants. For those who prefer action, there are many
opportunities to swim, surf, fish, sail, play tennis and
golf.
Watch Hill has some of the most beautiful architecture
found on the East Coast. Grand, shingle-style,
turn-of-the-century cottages dot the hilly landscape
leaving ample room between them so as to ensure rare
privacy in an ocean community. Many families have
summered here for generations giving Watch Hill an
old-fashioned flavor and sense of history. Watch Hill is
conveniently located approximately 100 miles from Boston
and 140 miles from New York City. The area is served by
Amtrak and a number of private and public airports.
PROPERTY
Perched atop a ridge, and overlooking Block Island Sound
and the Atlantic Ocean, the shingled three-story cottage
was built in 1902 and is a National Historic Landmark.
Mature landscaping surrounds a large, private in-ground
pool with a stone terrace and small pool house. The
drive to the property passes by a number of prominent
oceanfront estates. The oceanside beach is a short
stroll away, a major advantage as beach parking can be
limited. Because the property is centrally located, the
village is also within easy walking distance.
RESIDENCE
The front foyer leads to the main staircase, powder room
and spacious living room with fireplace. The library is
accessed through the living room as is the front porch
and large dining room. An original butler's pantry leads
to the eat-in-kitchen, laundry room, garage, and rear
stairs. There are high ceilings throughout as well as
many original architectural details.
The second floor contains a gracious master bedroom
suite with bath, fireplace, walk-in closets and lovely
views to Block Island and beyond. Two more bedrooms with
built-ins and details share a bath. An office, which
could be another bedroom, is also on this floor. The
bedrooms are nicely separated from one another to afford
privacy. Many original details remain including classic
double door sets leading to the bedrooms, one of which
is louvered to permit privacy and ocean breezes at the
same time.
The third floor has three more bedrooms, one with en
suite bath, one with an outdoor deck and wonderful ocean
views, and another small bedroom tucked under the eaves,
which share the fourth bath.
