LOCATION
Widely considered the most picturesque seaside village in
Connecticut, historic Stonington Borough is a lovingly
cared for place of narrow tree-Iined streets with stately
18th- and 19th-century residences, interesting shops, and
cozy restaurants. The area has an old-fashioned ambience
with neighbors who still gather for farmers' markets,
parades, and
entertainment on the square. Yet the main focus of life
revolves around the sea. Situated on a narrow peninsula
surrounded by Fisher's Island Sound and Little
Narragansett Bay, Stonington is home to a scenic deepwater
harbor that shelters Connecticut's last remaining
commercial fishing fleet. Also, because of its many
amenities and its location at the end of Long Island
Sound, Stonington has long been recognized as a major
yachting center.
Conveniently located halfway between New York and Boston,
the area has many popular visitor attractions including
the Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, and various summer
theatres. Ocean beaches, tennis, numerous golf courses,
horseback riding, and excellent salt and freshwater
fishing are just some of the area's many recreational
opportunities.
PROPERTY
Sitting atop the highest point of land in Stonington
Borough, this stately manor home offers absolute privacy
in the heart of the village and is within easy walking
distance of a full-service marina, 2 yacht clubs, shops,
restaurants, beaches, and all the benefits a village
setting affords. The property is rich with beautiful
stonework, mature specimen plantings, and English-style
gardens with winding pathways that lead to private sitting
areas. The garden also includes an impressive series of
deepwater fishponds connected by a cascading brook. An
adjoining Carriage House clad in reclaimed barn board has
a separate Apartment above and room for 2 cars below. It
is surrounded by a gated stone courtyard which offers
additional parking.
RESIDENCE
Although the house has nearly 8,000 square feet of
luxurious living space including the finished lower level,
it feels casually comfortable and cozy. The rooms are well
proportioned and bright with many fireplaces, beautiful
handcrafted millwork, wide-plank floors, hand-painted
murals, and custom cabinetry. The overall effect is that
of an antique country manor that just happens to have
every modern convenience.
FIRST FLOOR: The front Entry
Hall is large and welcoming and leads on the left to the
Dining Room, Kitchen, and service areas (including the
second Kitchen and main Laundry). To the right are the
main stairway, Living Room, Library, partner- style
Office, Conservatory, and Master Bedroom Suite, with large
Bath, Dressing Room, and Laundry. The layout offers
multiple doorways to the outdoors and beautiful garden
views. The house works equally well for either formal
entertaining or simple family gatherings.
SECOND FLOOR: The four
upstairs Bedroom Suites all have large Baths and closets.
One has a fireplace, while another offers a private
Terrace and separate Sitting Area. All have interesting
ceilings and built-ins. An additional Laundry facility is
also located on this level.
LOWER LEVEL: This level has a
large Home Theater, antique Bar, charming Bedroom with
Bath, and Playroom that can be used equally well for
children or billiards. A custom mural of the village
decorates one wall. A very complete Mechanical Room and
automatic emergency generator are also located on this
level.
